Racking Standards

Australian Standard AS4084-12
AS4084-12: Covers all static racking with the exception of drive in and drive through racking as well as cantilever and mobile racking. Section 9.2 Inspections.
Inspections shall be carried out on a regular basis, and at least once every 12 months to:
- ensure the correct application and use of the equipment;
- ensure that safe working loads are adhered to;
- ensure that the racking installation has not been altered. A copy of the load application and configuration drawings shall be retained for this purpose
- examine the extent of damage due to impact in the racking installation;
- examine the out of plumb of the racking;
- examine for any dislocation and deformation of sections and connections for uprights and beams; and
- examine connectors for deformation or signs of cracking at the welds.
The European Standard - FEM 10.2.04
The FEM standards have been adopted by many Australian Manufacturers of Steel Storage racking and provide a very clear guide to the safe use of static steel storage racking.
Federation Europeenne De La Manutention FEM 10.2.04 Guide Lines for the Safe Use of Static Steel Racking and Shelving: Inspections Shall be carried out at 6-12 month intervals by a technically competent person. The purpose of this inspection is to not only inspect the racking but to examine the performance of the management procedures for controlling rack safety. In all cases, however, the examination should be formal with a written report documenting the extent and result of the examination. Inspectors must be trained and experienced in the general working practices and in particular spotting the often innocuous looking errors that can lead to serious damage or injury.
REGULAR Inspection of storage equipment should be made systematically; an evaluation should be made of any damage found.
