The FEM standards have been adopted by many Australian Manufacturers of Steel Storage racking and provide a very clear guide to the safe use of static steel storage racking.
Federation Europeenne De La Manutention FEM 10.2.04 Guide Lines for the Safe Use of Static Steel Racking and Shelving: Inspections Shall be carried out at 6-12 month intervals by a technically competent person. The purpose of this inspection is to not only inspect the racking but to examine the performance of the management procedures for controlling rack safety. In all cases, however, the examination should be formal with a written report documenting the extent and result of the examination. Inspectors must be trained and experienced in the general working practices and in particular spotting the often innocuous looking errors that can lead to serious damage or injury.
